Nike - Werder Bremen

As from the beginning of the 2009/2010 season, NIKE will take over from long term partners KAPPA as the new Werder Bremen outfitter. The German Champions League participants and the world’s biggest sport goods producer sealed a five year co-operative deal in Frankfurt : “We are really looking forward to beginning our work together on 01.07.2009,” commented Werder general manager Klaus Allofs, having finalised the contract details with the market leader. “NIKE stands for innovative products, great quality and absolute reliability.”

Michaela Stitz, NIKE manager and representative for German speaking nations, was only too happy to repay the compliments: “Werder Bremen have been at the very top of the NIKE wish list for a long time now. The club symbolises inspiring, attacking football, sporting success and true professionalism. With such attributes the clubs slots perfectly into the portfolio of clubs and athletes with which NIKE works together worldwide. We are absolutely delighted about this partnership.”

According to Manfred Müller, head of marketing and management at Werder Bremen, the long partnership between the club and current outfitter KAPPA will come to a mutual and platonic end in the summer: “We had very fair negotiations with KAPPA too, but in the end, NIKE had the more attractive total package. Along with KAPPA we set some real optical standards in the league and can look back happily on nine very successful years together.”

NIKE and Werder Bremen have agreed not to officially release any further details on their cooperation before the coming summer.

Nike - Arsenal 09/10 Away Kit

Arsenal Football Club reveals its new away kit with a design that celebrates the sartorial excellence of the Club’s London birthplace.

The new kit embraces design features including a pinstripe in the shirt and a polo collar inspired by the shirts worn by the all-conquering side of the 1930s.

Inside the collar is a high-quality woven label that reads Arsenal, while engineered in to the side seam is a small blue label featuring two Arsenal canons either side of the club motto, ‘Victoria Concordia Crescit,’ which translates as ‘Victory Comes From Harmony.’

Along with the midnight blue shirt, the kit features midnight blue shorts with a photo blue stripe along the side with white canon stitched in to the back of the shorts on the waist-band and midnight blue socks with a photo blue stripe on the top band and Arsenal printed on the calf.

The shirt is made from Nike’s innovative Dri-Fit fabric, which keeps players drier, cooler and lighter by drawing sweat from the body to the fabric’s surface, while its three-dimensional construction gives more air space around the skin to reduce clinging.

Arsenal have long been revered as one of English football’s most traditional and stylish clubs. The Londoners boast a rich heritage and have always sought to play football with flair and sophistication.

While the modern day Arsenal has an increasingly continental influence, they remain a very English club, playing in the heart of the capital and representing the best of English style. The new Arsenal away kit has been inspired by the London’s sartorial excellence and Arsenal’s proud history and iconic footballing style.

Nike - Barcelona 09/10 Home/Away Kit

FC Barcelona unveiled the new 09/10 football kit made by Nike.

The new FC Barcelona football kit will be worn for the first time this Saturday. The design for the first choice strip goes back to the traditional navy blue and claret vertical stripes while the second strip is a bright mango colour.

The first choice shirt recovers the traditional navy blue and claret vertical stripes but now edged with a thin yellow line and has a V-neck and sleeve borders with a subtle black and yellow stripe. At the back of the neck we find the Senyera, the Catalan flag.

A label is sewn on the inside of the neck with “Més que un club” (More than a club) and attached to the side stitching another small label with the name of the club.

The shirt is made of Nike Dri-Fit material, which is designed to absorb sweat enabling the player to feel dry and fresh for longer. Its three-dimensional architecture allows a greater circulation of air around the skin which prevents the shirt sticking.

Nike - Aston Villa 09/10 Away Kit

Aston Villa unveiled the new 09/10 away kit made by Nike.

Aston Villa's kit for the 2009/10 season honours the club's significant England contributions. A new white and navy design acts as a tribute to the 67 Villans who have represented the English national team.

From the first capped players in 1882 to other club legends like Peter Withe and Brian Little, Aston Villa have provided more England internationals than any other club.

Aston Villa and Nike drew inspiration from the archives about our contribution to international football.

Looking to the future, the latest sports apparel innovation and technology has been utilised by Nike to help the current crop of players take their game to the next level. The visual design of the kit is intended to reflect the personality and style of the current Villa team (which often fields nine English born players and currently has five regular England internationals) whilst respecting the history of the club.

New kit features include a 'football white' shirt with a 'Villan red' trim, 'midnight navy' shorts and white socks. 'AVFC 1874' is stitched into the back of the shorts while 'AVFC' is present on the front of socks and short drawcord tips.

The club's mantra 'Prepared' is engineered into the side-seam of the shirts whilst also being present on the Villa crest. In addition, the kit is made from Nike Dri-Fit, an innovative technology that enhances the performances of players by keeping them drier, cooler and lighter. It achieves this by drawing sweat away from the body to the fabric's surface for fast drying, while its three-dimensional construction allows for more air space around the skin to reduce clinging.

Leo Sandino-Taylor, Nike UK Head of Corporate Communications said: "Aston Villa has some exciting English players in their squad who could make a real contribution to international football in the next few years. Their current success with the National team has provided the perfect opportunity to pay tribute to the club's England connections and create a technologically innovative kit that Villa fans and players will be proud to wear."

We were told this Champions League final would be a game displaying the beauty of the counter-attack; no two teams in Europe more adept at carrying it out. But United would certainly have hoped not to be so heartbreakingly on the end of its devastation.

Twice United dominated proceedings here in Rome, and both times Barcelona hit the Reds on the break as goals from Samuel Eto'o and Lionel Messi secured a 2-0 win for Barcelona in Rome. Make no mistake, Barca’s intricate passing football was brilliant at times, and there is no real injustice in the result.

That said, United could have been two or three goals up inside the first seven or eight minutes but, sad to say, this was to be Barcelona’s night.

Sir Alex went with the team many predicted, full of pace and set up to counter. There were no real surprises in the Barcelona outfit either, Andres Iniesta and Thierry Henry recovering from recent injuries to take their place in the starting line-up.

Gary Neville was the noticeable absentee from United’s 18-man squad. The Reds skipper lost out to Rafael on the bench. And even in choosing the young Brazilian’s speed over Neville’s experience, it said everything about the type of game Sir Alex sought to play.

The teams entered this, the biggest of stages in European football, and tantalisingly walked past the trophy both clubs so keenly covet. Sir Alex passionately feels that his side have not triumphed in Europe enough; but Barcelona, going for a third European title, would say the same. And so the stage was set for one of the most eagerly-anticipated finals in years.

The fans roared on the Reds, playing in white, as Anderson earned an early free-kick with a cheeky nutmeg.

Hull 0 United 1

There were smiles all around the KC Stadium at the final whistle, although United took home the points in Hull courtesy of a Darron Gibson screamer.

The Reds, crowned champions last week, finished the season four points clear of Liverpool, while results elsewhere ensured Hull’s top-flight survival and prompted wild celebrations in the stands.

Gibson’s first-half goal – lashed into the top corner from outside the box – settled an entertaining affair that gave United fans plenty of reasons to smile, not least because of how well the Reds’ youngsters acquitted themselves on such a tense occasion.

Only Darren Fletcher – suspended for Wednesday’s Champions League final – remained from the team that drew 0-0 against Arsenal at Old Trafford eight days earlier. Indeed, Sir Alex reshuffled his pack so much that even his left-back – young Belgian defender Ritchie De Laet – will have been unfamiliar to most United fans.

Elsewhere, Lee Martin earned a league debut and Wes Brown returned to action after almost four months on the sidelines. In midfield, Fletcher partnered Gibson in the centre of the park, with Nani and Danny Welbeck on the flanks. Federico Macheda started up front, with Martin playing just behind the Italian.

Hull, playing for their top-flight survival, began brightly and forced two early corners. But the Reds held firm, Kuszczak meeting the second with a confident clearing punch. The Polish stopper was called on again in the eighth minute, this time diving bravely at Craig Fagan’s feet.

Champions Of England

United 0 Arsenal 0

United are once again champions of England and inevitably, it was achieved the hard way, with a nail-biting goalless draw against Arsenal at Old Trafford.

A tense, nerve-wracking afternoon saw few chances at either at end, as a largely dour match dragged agonisingly to its conclusion. Hearts were in mouths for United fans throughout the afternoon, and never more than when Cesc Fabregas struck the post with six minutes remaining.

Victories over Manchester City and Wigan had the champions six points clear of second-placed Liverpool going into the match, meaning a point would secure a record-equalling 18th league title. Mindful of the dangers of playing for a draw, the Reds were quick out of the traps.

Barely 15 seconds had passed before Cristiano Ronaldo got the better of Kieran Gibbs, exposing the space behind the young full-back to race onto Darren Fletcher’s through-ball. The Portuguese declined to continue his sprint, however, and his cross was cleared before it could reach Ryan Giggs.

That early opening heralded a sustained spell of United pressure, which only served to heighten the expectant buzz which had hummed around Old Trafford long before kick-off.

However, Arsenal, still reeling from their Champions League exit at the hands of United, and the subsequent scrutiny of their silverware drought of recent years, were not at Old Trafford to simply roll over for the champions-elect.

GLORY GLORY MAN UNITED..

Wigan 1 United 2

United moved to the brink of the Barclays Premier League title with a pulsating second-half performance and two wonderful goals at Wigan.

Man of the moment Carlos Tevez came off the bench to equalise before midfield maestro Michael Carrick sealed a superb away win for the champions with five minutes remaining. This rally put Steve Bruce’s plucky Wigan side to the sword and no doubt destroyed the morale of a certain club on Merseyside, who’d no doubt been buoyed by Hugo Rodallega’s shock opener for the home team.

Sir Alex made five changes to his derby-winning side, the return of John O’Shea, Anderson, Michael Carrick, Paul Scholes and Wayne Rooney suggesting this eleven was picked with the Reds’ next midweek fixure in mind, the Champions League final.

United were given an early fright when Antonio Valencia’s searing pace enabled him to break between Jonny Evans and Nemanja Vidic close to the halfway line and carry the ball menacingly into the box. Fortunately, the Reds’ senior centre-back made a sufficiently quick recovery to put the Ecuadorian off his stride, Valencia chipping his shot off target from six yards instead of beating Edwin van der Sar.

The Reds crafted two better opportunities to take the lead in quick succession around the 10th minute, with Dimitar Berbatov involved in both. First the Bulgarian laid on a peach of a right-wing cross that Rooney, so often the scourge of Wigan, unfortunately headed wide. Then Berbatov fed Cristiano Ronaldo and his low centre, again from the right, was steered agonisingly over the top left corner by Michael Carrick.

United 2 City 0

United now need just four points from three games to win a third successive league title after the Reds brushed aside Mark Hughes’ men in the Manchester derby on Sunday.

First-half goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez sealed the points on a day when United’s back four were rarely troubled. The Blues were no match for a United side determined to regain top spot after Liverpool’s win at West Ham on Saturday had sent the Scousers temporarily to the summit.

Now, however, three points clear and with a game in hand, the Reds are favourites to secure an 11th Premier League trophy and could do so at Old Trafford next Saturday should Sir Alex's men beat Wigan Athletic on Wednesday night.

For Sunday's derby battle, the United boss made five changes to the side that beat Arsenal at the Emirates on Tuesday. Jonny Evans and Rafael came into the back four for Rio Ferdinand and John O’Shea, while Ryan Giggs slotted into the centre of midfield. Up front, Tevez and Dimitar Berbatov started together for the 11th time in the league this season.

It was Ji-sung Park who had the first chance of the game. The South Korean, who’s scored in United’s last two matches, collected Ronaldo’s knock-down inside the box on three minutes but dragged his shot wide of Shay Given’s right-hand post.

The Reds enjoyed a lot of early possession and both Tevez and Ronaldo tested Given in the opening 10 minutes. City looked dangerous on occasion too, Robinho proving a handful for young Rafael at right back.

Arsenal 1 United 3

Bring on Barça or the Blues. United will be in Rome on 27 May to defend the Champions League trophy.

The Champions League holders turned in a flawless away performance to completely dismantle Arsene Wenger's Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, killing the tie through early goals from Ji-sung Park and Cristiano Ronaldo, before the Portuguese added gloss to the scoreline with a breakaway third.

The only sour note for United came through the late dismissal of Darren Fletcher. The Scot will miss the final after being incorrectly punished for bringing down Cesc Fabregas inside the United area, allowing Robin van Persie to hammer home a late penalty.

That made for a cruel end to the evening for Fletcher who, like each and every one of his colleagues, had been magnificent in overcoming the Gunners. It was in stark contrast to the manner in which the evening began, as United put the tie to bed inside 11 minutes.

Arsenal supporters had been encouraged to whip up a frenzied atmosphere to try and help their side overcome a single goal deficit brought about by John O'Shea's first leg strike at Old Trafford, but the Emirates' noise levels dipped irretrievably after seven minutes.

United's mantra had been obvious from the first whistle: counter attack. On the Reds' second such foray, Anderson slipped in Ronaldo, who had been detailed with the lone striker's role by virtue of his searing pace, and the Portuguese fizzed a low ball across the area. Teenage full-back Kieran Gibbs slipped at the crucial moment, allowing Park to pinch the ball and slip a shot over Manuel Almunia and into the goal.

The pocket of some 3,500 United fans behind the opposite goal burst into a frenzied celebration.United win on aggregate 1-4.

Middlesbrough 0 United 2

A near-perfect afternoon's work at the Riverside Stadium allowed United to open up a six-point lead at the head of the Barclays Premier League table, and rest a number of key players ahead of Tuesday's Champions League semi-final trip to the Emirates Stadium.

Ryan Giggs and Ji-sung Park struck in either half to give the Reds three priceless domestic points, as the annually tricky trip to Middlesbrough evolved into a Saturday afternoon stroll on Teesside. United's defensive resolve and attacking incision bore the hallmark of champions, and barely gave the relegation-haunted hosts a sniff of encouragement.

As expected, Sir Alex Ferguson shuffled his pack with next week's clash with Arsenal at the core of his thinking. Edwin van der Sar, Michael Carrick, Darren Fletcher and the injured Rio Ferdinand were omitted from the squad entirely, while Anderson, Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez were held in reserve on the substitutes' bench.

That meant only John O'Shea, Nemanja Vidic, Patrice Evra and Wayne Rooney started after lining up against the Gunners last Wednesday, and Middlesbrough - desperate for points to stave off the very real threat of relegation - were keen to check for any signs that the Reds' collective attentions were already drifting to European matters.

There were certainly none apparent in a keenly-contested opening in which both sides harrassed the other for possession. John O'Shea had to be alert to head Jeremie Aliadiere's cross away from Stewart Downing, while Rooney drilled narrowly over from distance as the first 20 minutes carried little threat of either side opening the scoring.
