Arsenal 1 United 3

United are breathing down Chelsea's necks again after a maiden league win at the Emirates Stadium left Arsenal's title credentials in tatters.

The Reds raced into a 3-0 lead through Manuel Almunia's own goal, Wayne Rooney's 100th Premier League strike and a first notch of the season for Ji-sung Park. And although the Gunners scored late on through Thomas Vermaelen, it was to be no more than a consolation for the hosts in a game that started – and finished – in end-to-end fashion.

The first warning shot across United’s bows came from Andrei Arshavin but after running at Brown from the left flank, he failed to bend the ball inside the far post.

The same side of the pitch yielded the Reds’ first raids of promise when Darren Fletcher and then Nani played low balls into Arsenal’s six-yard box; William Gallas prevented Wayne Rooney from netting the first one, while Alex Song swept the second one out for a corner. Arsenal almost self-harmed at the setpiece, but Nasri was on duty at the near post to clear Denilson’s (own) goal-bound header.

Arshavin was again the outlet for Arsenal in the 14th minute but although Edwin van der sar was concerned enough to dive, the Russian’s second attempt from left to right flew wide like his first. A more central threat from Arshavin ended in disappointment for the home fans when he wildly sliced a shot from the edge of the area, and although it fell to Nasri, the Frenchman couldn’t follow up.

United 3 Man City 1

The Carling Cup may not top the list of priorities at the start of the season, but there's no denying how sweet the feeling is to reach the final this year at the expense of our Manchester neighbours. Goals from Paul Scholes, Michael Carrick and another dramatic injury-time derby winner, this time from Wayne Rooney, sent the Reds to Wembley at the end of an enthralling 180 minutes of semi-final football.

After all City's posturing since they struck gold with their change of ownership, this was hard evidence that Manchester's football hierarchy remains intact - and United's fans relished hammering home the point after the final whistle.

The Reds had every right to feel aggrieved at trailing 2-1 after the first-leg. United had controlled large swathes of the match at Eastlands, and remarkably a frantic last 20 minutes had not yielded a second goal. As for City’s two efforts, the penalty for Carlos Tevez’s first was highly contentious, while the decision to award a corner kick in the lead-up to the Argentinian’s second could also be questioned.

That sense of injustice, added to fans’ desire to keep City’s trophyless years ticking by – not forgetting a Wembley final and trophy defence at stake – meant expectations were ramped up for this fixture, as were the noise levels. Sir Alex predicted an atmosphere akin to a top European night; he wasn’t to be disappointed. To a man, the entire Old Trafford crowd - with 9,000 visiting fans raising the stakes – were up for this one.

United 4 Hull 0

United returned to the top of the Barclays Premier League table with a 4-0 victory that was inspired by the imperious quality of Wayne Rooney, who scored all four goals.

Up until the last ten minutes, the performance had perhaps not been completely convincing, but the same could not be said of Rooney’s 90 minutes.

The Reds’ no.10 turned what was a fairly ordinary match into a healthy victory that catapults United above Arsenal and Chelsea, who both play league fixtures in midweek. His first arrived in the eighth minute during a first-half display that was energetic and provided plenty of attacking intent. But United struggled to back it up in the second period, that is until Rooney took matters into his own hands. The final eight minutes were a gold rush for Rooney as he bagged the match ball in brilliant style.

Sir Alex was able to recall Rio Ferdinand for his first match since defeat to Liverpool at Anfield back in October, while Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney started together for only the fourth time in the league.

The United boss made clear that the target on an otherwise free weekend in the Barclays Premier League was to take top spot from new leaders Arsenal. United’s determination to achieve it was clear from the start as Rooney broke through down the left channel and cut the ball back for Owen in the third minute. The United no.7’s shot, however, was deflected wide by Hull captain Anthony Gardner.

Man City 2 United 1

Former Reds favourite Carlos Tevez scored twice to hand Manchester City a 2-1 win and set up a mouth-watering Carling Cup semi-final second leg.

The Blues go into next Wednesday’s clash at Old Trafford in pole position but Sir Alex will take plenty of positives from United’s performance on Tuesday. For much of the first 45 minutes the Reds’ midfield outplayed and overran City’s middle men, pegging them back to the point where it looked like Roberto Mancini had opted to play seven in defence.

Ryan Giggs capitalised on United’s early dominance, slotting home on 17 minutes, before Tevez controversially equalised from the spot and then headed City in front after the break.

Sir Alex broke his pre-match promise of sticking with the youngsters in the Carling Cup, admitting to MUTV that derbies were a different breed of game. Instead, the boss opted for old heads: the only player in the Reds’ starting XI younger than 22 was Brazilian right-back Rafael. And it was the most experienced man on the pitch – nay, the most experienced man to ever pull on a Manchester United shirt – who put the Reds in front.

City hadn’t heeded the early danger signs coming down their left flank. As early as the third minute Antonio Valencia had been afforded time and space and the Ecuadorian played a pivotal role in laying on Ryan Giggs’ 152nd United goal.

Picked out by Patrice Evra, Valencia beat Craig Bellamy before sending in the sort of cross goalkeepers and defenders have nightmares about.
