United moved five points clear of the chasing pack in the Barclays Premier League title race, but this was a far from straightforward three points as the Reds had to come back from a two-goal deficit and a below-par performance for almost 70 minutes of this clash at Bloomfield Road.

Ian Holloway’s side were 2-0 up and the better side at half-time after headed goals from poorly defended corners from Craig Cathcart and DJ Campbell. But with the home side’s tempo and energy expended, and with substitutes Ryan Giggs and Javier Hernandez providing pace and penetration, the final 20 minutes was all one-way traffic. Dimitar Berbatov got the first of two goals after 72 minutes, then Hernandez equalised before his Bulgarian strike-partner completed the dramatic turnaround with two minutes of normal time remaining – although there were ten minutes of added time to survive due to a serious head injury suffered by Rafael.

Sir Alex Ferguson described Blackpool as a “revelation” in the Premier League this season; that didn’t stop him selecting an attacking trident of Nani, Dimitar Berbatov and Wayne Rooney, suggesting a need to be positive from the off. With Paul Scholes recalled for his first game since the Champions League victory over Rangers in November and his penchant for a deep-lying, quarter-back role, there was licence for the front five to press forward. That meant Darron Gibson, in for Ryan Giggs, and Darren Fletcher, replacing Anderson, getting forward where possible. Rafael returned from a one-game ban for a red card at Tottenham Hotspur in place of John O’Shea.

‘We’re Man United, we do what we want’, United fans have taken to singing this season, and that was the team's mantra as the Reds, led by hat-trick hero Dimitar Berbatov, brilliantly and ruthlessly took Birmingham City apart with unopposed ease.

Berbatov sealed a hat-trick of hat-tricks in 2010/11 – the first Red to achieve that since Ruud van Nistelrooy in 2002/03 – while Ryan Giggs and Nani completed a comprehensive 5-0 win. The gap should have been much wider in a display on a par with an equally chilly day in November when Sir Alex Ferguson’s side brutally beatn Blackburn Rovers 7-1.

Birmingham, already missing influential defender Scott Dann, perhaps had one eye on their midweek Carling Cup semi-final second-leg tie with West Ham, as Craig Gardner, Sebastian Larsson and Cameron Jerome were all among their substitutes. For United, Rafael’s suspension meant John O’Shea got his first appearance since the 4-0 cup loss at West Ham in November. Rio Ferdinand was also missing with a groin injury, but Chris Smalling confidently stepped in to partner Nemanja Vidic.

Otherwise, it was the team that claimed a 0-0 draw last week at Tottenham Hotspur. And while those battling qualities might have been expected of Sir Alex’s men, it was goals the Reds boss was after. This fixture hasn’t had a habit of producing them of late; in fact, neither team had scored more than once in the previous five meetings.

United returned to the Barclays Premier League summit by virtue of a hard-earned point at White Hart Lane.

In a tense, often attritional game between two sides brimming with attacking talent and intent, mutual respect won out as both sides harried and hassled each other into submission - though United had to play out the final 16 minutes with 10 men, after the dismissal of Rafael for two bookings.

Few clear-cut opportunities arose for either side. Wayne Rooney forced three smart saves from Heurelho Gomes, but Tottenham enjoyed the lion's share of the play and spurned presentable first-half chances through Peter Crouch and Rafael van der Vaart.

Sir Alex Ferguson was able to call upon all his experienced players who had been rated as doubts to make the match. Edwin van der Sar, Nemanja Vidic, Michael Carrick and Wayne Rooney all started, while Paul Scholes returned to the bench.

Keen for his side to fight fire with fire at the home of one of the most attacking teams in the Premier League, the manager lined United up in a 4-4-2 formation, pairing Rooney with Dimitar Berbatov. Harry Redknapp, meanwhile, fielded Crouch as his attack's focal point to compliment the roaming menace of van der Vaart.

United's last visit to White Hart Lane began with an early concession; falling behind to Jermain Defoe's overhead kick in under a minute. This time, less than 10 seconds had passed when Gareth Bale's cross was plucked from the air by van der Sar, with van der Vaart lurking.

United are through to the FA Cup fourth round as a Ryan Giggs penalty after just two minutes ensured victory in an action-packed, end-to-end encounter with ten-man Liverpool.

Giggs’ spot-kick quelled Liverpool’s early optimism, while their own captain Steven Gerrard all but extinguished it with a reckless two-footed challenge on Michael Carrick that rightly earned him a red card after 32 minutes.

Liverpool – remarkably given their form and the turmoil on and off the pitch that has engulfed their season – arrived at Old Trafford on a wave of optimism. Roy Hodgson’s sacking and Kenny Dalglish's subsequent return to the club the day previously, ensured the 9,000 visiting fans had plenty to sing about before the match. But they would soon be silenced.

United, on the other hand, have started 2011 on a high, top of the league and hopeful of what the year might bring – not least the prospect of a 19th league title. But while Sir Alex Ferguson was keen to avoid the shock of last season’s FA Cup third round exit at the hands of local rivals Leeds, he had to contend with a cluster of first-choice absentees. Edwin van der Sar was still missing after suffering with a virus, while Wayne Rooney’s ankle problem meant he was not risked either. Worse still, Nemanja Vidic was a late drop-out – United’s influential skipper replaced by Jonny Evans, who would stand up to the demands of this fixture admirably.

Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez came off the bench to clinch United's second league away win of the season and give the Reds the happiest of starts to the New Year.

The Mexican's 75th-minute header, added to a third-minute goal from Wayne Rooney, ensured all three points for the league leaders who survived a major scare when Peter Odemwingie missed a penalty for West Brom just after the hour mark when the score was 1-1. The Baggies had earlier cancelled out Rooney's opener with a stunning long-range strike from midfielder James Morrison.

The only worry for United as the game drew to a close was an apparent injury to Rooney but with Sir Alex having used all three subs, the striker played on to the final whistle. Wayne limped during the final moments but there was nothing wrong with his movement at the opposite end of the match, when he made the breakthrough with the first Barclays Premier League goal of 2011.

It was also Rooney's first goal from open play this season - his last was away to Bayern Munich in March. Two Frenchmen combined to create it for the England striker - Gabriel Obertan, making his first league start away from Old Trafford, drew the attention of two West Brom defenders with some trickery on the left flank and then rolled the ball back for Patrice Evra to whip in a first-time cross.

United’s hectic festive schedule began with a comfortable victory over Sunderland, as Dimitar Berbatov struck a goal in either half at Old Trafford to keep the Premier League leaders motoring along.

Restricted to only two matches in December prior to the Black Cats’ visit, United’s appetite for action was quickly apparent. Berbatov headed home the opener inside five minutes, then he and Anderson both struck the woodwork and several other chances were spurned inside the opening 20 minutes, and it took a deflected strike early in the second half to make the game safe for the Reds.

Injury-hit Sunderland scarcely threatened throughout the afternoon, and Sir Alex Ferguson was able to replace the effective Ryan Giggs and Anderson midway through the second period as he looked ahead to Tuesday’s trip to Birmingham.

Deprived of Nani and Darren Fletcher through injury and illness, Sir Alex made two enforced changes to the side which overcame Arsenal earlier this month. Ryan Giggs replaced the Portuguese winger on the left flank, while the inclusion of Berbatov prompted a reprisal of his strike partnership with Wayne Rooney.

Within five minutes the duo had combined to devastating effect. Exploiting poor positioning from the visitors, Giggs latched onto Anderson’s pass, meandered towards goal and fed Rooney, whose measured chip was emphatically nodded home at the back post by Berbatov.

United leapfrogged Arsenal to go two points clear at the top of the Barclays Premier League with a game in hand in a match that entertained without a raft of goalscoring chances.

Ji-sung Park struck the game’s only goal in a first half that the Reds dominated, while Sir Alex Ferguson's men could even afford a missed Wayne Rooney penalty in the second half after a sustained period of Arsenal pressure.

While the visitors boasted their fair share of time on the ball in the second half, United always looked the more capable of doing something with it.

Sir Alex couldn’t have been much happier with the players at his disposal. Paul Scholes failed to overcome a groin strain in time to make the game, but Michael Carrick and Anderson are arguably United’s form midfield pairing, while Darren Fletcher provides energy and purpose. While Scholes’ ball retention would be missed, the speed this game was played at perhaps demanded young lungs.

Conversely, Arsene Wenger was left plugging holes with Robin van Persie and Cesc Fabregas only able to make the bench, while Arsene Wenger was forced to hand a Premier League debut to 20-year-old Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny. The Gunners’ back four resembled more an attempt at a high-score in a game of scrabble than a defensive line for a top-of-the-table clash.

A rare goal from Anderson gave United a point in a captivating encounter with Valencia, ensuring the Reds’ passage to the knockout stages of the Champions League as winners of Group C.

The Spaniards had forged ahead before the interval when Pablo Hernandez punished a slack piece of play from Michael Carrick – firing home the first goal the Reds have conceded in this season’s competition – before Anderson tucked away the rebound from Ji-sung Park’s parried shot just after the hour mark.

Already assured of qualification to the second round, both sides scuffled for victory in an end-to-end tussle. Sir Alex Ferguson named a side bearing only two changes from that which obliterated Blackburn Rovers in Old Trafford’s most recent fixture. Most surprising was the inclusion of Ben Amos, who made his Champions League debut in goal, while Fabio replaced the injured Patrice Evra at left-back.

Whereas latter group stage games can often be lacklustre affairs, both sides signalled an early intention to attack. Nani dragged a shot just past Vicente Guaita’s left-hand post inside four minutes, while Ricardo Costa headed wide when well placed.

Anderson played a neat one-two with Rooney and fired tamely at Guaita, before Alejandro Dominguez twice came close in quick succession; firstly drawing a smart save from Amos with a cheeky effort from distance, then cracking a low drive against the outside of the youngster’s post.

From one extreme to another, United followed Saturday’s 7-1 Barclays Premier League hammering of Blackburn Rovers with a disjointed 4-0 Carling Cup quarter-final defeat away to West Ham, surrendering the Reds’ two-year grip on the trophy and ending a 29-game unbeaten run in all competitions for Sir Alex Ferguson’s men.

West Ham, playing with the shackles off from their struggles against relegation in the league, looked hungrier and certainly more organised than United, who could conjure none of the verve and magic of the weekend’s demolition of Sam Allardyce’s side, and instead at times seemed intent only on defensive self-destruction.

Despite United’s success in this competition in recent years it still does not top the list of priorities, but that will not soften the blow of a frustrating and disappointing night in East London as United missed out on a 13th appearance in the semi-finals of the League Cup.

For the trip to a snow-capped Upton Park, Sir Alex made ten changes from the team that so freely took Blackburn apart at Old Trafford, with only Anderson surviving from the weekend’s starting XI. Although there was widespread change in the United ranks, the team still boasted plenty of senior men, with Anderson joined in central midfield by Ryan Giggs and Darren Fletcher.

An early flurry of West Ham possession quickly gave way to a spell of United dominance, and the Reds had the first chance after seven minutes following a series of raids down the right side. After several attempted crosses, John O’Shea’s sidefooted ball found Gabriel Obertan. The Frenchman took two touches to create space for a shot, which Rob Green brilliantly tipped onto the post. Javier Hernandez slid in at the far post for the rebound, but James Tomkins beat the Mexican to the ball.

A cakewalk, a canter, call it what you will: United, inspired by a sublime Dimitar Berbatov performance, tore Blackburn apart at Old Trafford on Saturday.

The Bulgarian netted an incredible five times as the Reds smashed seven goals past Sam Allardyce’s men to surge to the top of the Barclays Premier League.

It was the sort of one-sided performance fans had expected last weekend when Wigan Athletic were reduced to nine men. Instead, it was a full complement of Blackburn players that were on the receiving end of the Reds’ best performance of the season, and United's biggest win since AS Roma were beaten by the same scoreline in April 2007.

Sir Alex made six changes, including his entire back four, to the side that won in Glasgow on Wednesday night, with Rafael, Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra all returning and Anderson and Ji-sung Park handed starts in midfield.

Wayne Rooney and Berbatov kept their spots up front and the pair took little more than a minute to combine for the Reds’ first goal. Rooney outjumped his marker at the near post to meet Nani's cross and his glancing header fell to Berbatov, who volleyed home a simple finish from six yards.

It was the perfect start for Sir Alex's men and, in particular, Berbatov, who'd previously not found the net since scoring a sensational hat-trick against Liverpool in September. Four days earlier, Sir Alex had predicted the Bulgarian would benefit more than most from Rooney's return; the early evidence at Old Trafford reinforced that belief.

The pair linked well all afternoon, swapping passes in tight spaces and making unselfish runs off the ball to open up space. At one point in the first half, a series of clever interchanges cut through Rovers' defence with such ease that the action resembled a training ground stroll rather than a Barclays Premier League fixture.

Meanwhile, Blackburn struggled to assert themselves on the game. Rafael's close attentions frustrated former Liverpool forward El-Hadji Diouf, while lone frontman Jason Roberts was starved of service from midfield.

Nani tested visiting goalkeeper Paul Robinson at his near post before Christopher Samba almost put through his own net and Berbatov headed wide from a corner.
United were knocking on the door and a second goal duly arrived on 23 minutes. Park carried the ball forward from the inside left channel and fed Rooney on the edge of the area. The South Korean continued his run, Rooney returned the pass and Park, now clean through and with only Robinson to beat, dinked the ball over the Rovers goalkeeper. It was simple, beautiful and devastatingly effective.

Clearly shell-shocked by United's storming start, Blackburn then hit the self-destruct button and gifted United a third goal on 27 minutes. Full-back Pascal Chimbonda didn't look before playing the ball back to goalkeeper Robinson and instead passed the ball straight to Berbatov, who, loitering in the Rovers penalty area, blasted the ball into the net.

Wayne Rooney kept his cool at Ibrox to slot home a late penalty and book United’s place in the Champions League knockout phase.

It was hardly a perfect performance from the no.10 (or United for that matter), but on his first start in almost two months the Englishman scored the only goal of a game in which the Reds had struggled to assert supremacy.

Indeed, it had appeared the game would fizzle out into another 0-0 draw, but when Steven Naismith felled Fabio inside the penalty area as the Brazilian headed goalwards, referee Massimo Busacca pointed immediately to the spot. Rooney stepped up and did the rest.

Sir Alex’s men had arrived in Glasgow without first-choice centre-backs Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, but the back four of John O’Shea, Jonny Evans, Chris Smalling and Fabio, a combination that had never previously taken to the pitch, repelled all Rangers could throw at them. That wasn’t much.

Playing at Ibrox, that famous cauldron of partisan ferocity, Rangers might have been expected to show more adventure. But the home team’s ambition amounted to little more than sporadic counter-attacks, meaning Sir Alex's men are now just one match away from becoming the first team to navigate the Champions League group stage without conceding a goal.

The Reds enjoyed plenty of possession in the early exchanges and Paul Scholes probed for openings from the first whistle.

United leapfrogged Arsenal and moved level on points with Chelsea at the top of the league after a comfortable, if unspectacular, victory over nine-man Wigan Athletic.

Patrice Evra put the Reds in front just before half-time after a first 45 minutes that hardly set pulses racing. But it was a rush of blood to the head for Antolin Alcaraz and Hugo Rodallega – both sent off within three second-half minutes – that ultimately sealed Wigan’s demise.

Substitute Javier Hernandez added a second with a little over ten minutes to go, but if there was to be one complaint on a relatively routine afternoon at Old Trafford, it was that the Reds didn’t make more of the numerical advantage for over half an hour of the game.

United were buoyed before kick-off by news of Tottenham Hotspurs’ dramatic, late 3-2 victory over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. The opportunity therefore presented itself to move above the second-placed Gunners, and later to go level on points with league leaders Chelsea, who lost at Birmingham.

Sir Alex recalled Wayne Rooney to his match squad for the first time in over a month, but the 25-year-old was only named on the bench as he is being eased back into action. Instead the boss rewarded Federico Macheda, scorer of the goal that sparked the comeback at Villa Park last weekend, with a start. The Italian teenager’s credentials for a starting berth were enhanced with a midweek brace for his country’s Under-21s.

United staged a late fightback at Villa Park to earn a point after going two goals down to a relatively inexperienced Aston Villa side.

Gerard Houllier’s young men had taken the lead through Ashley Young and Marc Albrighton, but Reds substitute Federico Macheda gave an out-of-sorts United hope on 81 minutes before Nemanja Vidic headed home a vital equaliser with five minutes to go.

Much had been made of United’s selection problems in the build-up to the game, but Villa were equally hampered by injury and illness with as many as 10 regular first-teamers unavailable. Sir Alex made two changes to the side that earned a point at Eastlands, with Wes Brown coming in for the injured Rafael and Javier Hernandez adding weight to United’s attack, which was without the services of the suspended Paul Scholes.

The four Manchester derbies last season served up enough drama to last a lifetime; the first instalment for 2010/11 was tepid in comparison and finished goalless.

A cagey first-half gave way to more entertainment in the second, but only just. In the end, neither side took enough risks to win the game. City, in particular, were devoid of attacking ambition in front of their home crowd and Reds goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar later revealed he thought Roberto Mancini's men had played for a draw.

Despite the stalemate, Sir Alex's men remain unbeaten and in second place on the Barclays Premier League table, now four points behind leaders Chelsea. The Londoners beat Fulham 1-0 at Stamford Bridge.

The Reds had been rocked by illness in the days preceding the game, yet many of those hit hardest started at Eastlands. This was a Manchester derby, after all: nobody was going to surrender easily.

One man who failed to pass a late fitness test, though, was Ryan Giggs. The 36-year-old has been nursing a hamstring strain recently and was conspicuous in his absence on Tuesday night: until now, Giggs had played in every single Manchester derby – 33 of them – since making his United debut in 1991.

Shorn of several key players through illness and fronted by a well-drilled Wolverhampton Wanderers side, the Reds negated a disjointed display to take the spoils through Ji-sung Park's injury-time winner.

The Korean, whose first-half opener had been cancelled out by ex-Red Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, slotted inside Marcus Hahnemann's near post in the third of four added minutes to send Old Trafford wild and extend United's winning run to six games.

That sequence included a similarly dramatic Carling Cup victory over Mick McCarthy's side, and the Midlanders can once again feel hard done-by after more than matching the Reds for long periods. Had substitute Steven Fletcher not blasted over from 10 yards late on, they might have been celebrating a famous victory.

United edged a step closer to qualification for the Champions League knock-out stages with a hard-fought 3-0 victory over Bursaspor in Turkey.

After surviving a couple of minor scares in a tepid first half, the Reds were, in the end, just too good for the Turkish champions who could not be faulted for effort on the night. Effort can only get you so far, however, with quality more often than not winning out and so it proved. Darren Fletcher put the visitors ahead three minutes after the break, with Gabriel Obertan and an Ali Tandogan own goal (although at first glance it looked to be a Bebe strike) sealing the win late on with a pair of fine finishes to put United on 10 points at the top of Group C.

Sir Alex, who was missing a host of players through injury and illness, made three changes to the side that started against Tottenham, with Chris Smalling replacing the rested Rio Ferdinand at the heart of the defence, Paul Scholes returning in central midfield and Gabriel Obertan coming in for only his second start of the campaign. Javier Hernandez and Ji-sung Park dropped to the bench with Dimitar Berbatov leading the line on his own up front. Bursaspor manager Ertugrul Saglam, meanwhile, had the luxury of fielding a full-strength team, although he opted to leave defender Milan Stepanov, fit again after suffering a knee injury at Old Trafford, on the bench.

Goals of contrasting simplicity from Nemanja Vidic and Nani gave United a crucial, hard-fought victory over Tottenham at Old Trafford.

Skipper Vidic flashed home a header from Nani's superb free-kick just after the half-hour mark, before the winger slotted in a bizarre clincher; tapping home after Heurelho Gomes had surrendered possession to take a free-kick which Mark Clattenburg and his officials had failed to award.

The Portuguese had clearly handled the ball as he appealed for an apparent penalty, but Clattenburg's decision not to stop play and Gomes' attempts to line up a set-piece married in bizarre circumstances. Nani looked to the referee to see the state of play, was encouraged to play on and slotted home a simple finish.

Old Trafford cannot have witnessed a goal of such absurdity often in its century, but fortunately Vidic's earlier goal should negate the majority of the inevitable controversy which will follow. The goal and its slapstick circumstances detracted from an otherwise compelling game between two fine sides.

In the continued absence of Wayne Rooney, Sir Alex Ferguson once again paired Dimitar Berbatov with on-song Mexican newcomer Javier Hernandez upfront, against a Spurs backline deprived by injury of mainstays Ledley King and Michael Dawson. In their stead, William Gallas and Younes Kaboul paired in the heart of the visitors’ defence.

Javier Hernandez took United to within three games of Wembley on Tuesday night when his 90th-minute winner sunk Wolverhampton Wanderers and settled an absorbing Carling Cup tie.

The Mexican striker came off the bench with less than 10 minutes to play and, as he's done so many times already in his short 11-game United career, made an instant impact. His winner, a cool left-footed finish after he'd sold a defender a sublime dummy, was his sixth for the club and his fourth in three games.

His late goal settled a game that epitomised one of football's biggest cliches. It really was a game of two halves: the first was largely free from action, the second featured five goals as Wolves twice clawed back deficits before suffering their final, agonising fate.

Plenty of questions have been raised in the last week about United’s capacity for long-term success, but on this evidence there's little sign that the silverware is about to dry up. On a mild Tuesday evening a string of youngsters were handed a chance to impress, including Robbie Brady and Ravel Morrison, neither of whom had previously been involved in a first-team squad. They began on the bench – Morrison eventually came on for a 60-second cameo but didn't get a touch – alongside fellow youngster Magnus Eikrem (an unused substitute at Scunthorpe), club captain Gary Neville, Rafael, Tomasz Kuszczak and match-winner Hernandez.

It was always going to be hard-fought if United's first away win of the league campaign was to be at the Britannia Stadium, and so it proved as Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez's double defeated Stoke City with minutes to spare.

The Mexican made the breakthrough with a backheader in the first half but it was his second goal, a less spectacular stab from close range, that cued the biggest celebrations, coming as it did in the 85th minute - four minutes after Tuncay equalised for the home side. At that point, when the Stoke substitute's superb shot rippled the net behind Edwin van der Sar, the Reds looked to be heading for a fifth successive away draw after once again surrendering a winning position. But United stayed calm and constructed a fine move that Chicharito finished with lethal aplomb.

Sir Alex favoured experience and physical presence over Brazilian flair, handing club captain Gary Neville his 600th United appearance at right-back – instead of Rafael - and picking John O’Shea at left-back with Patrice Evra pushed up to wide midfield. The Bulgarian’s first sight of goal came when Fletcher threaded a pass to him on the edge of the area but Stoke keeper Thomas Sorensen was swiftly off his line to intervene. Moments later, Berbatov led a three-on-two break and fed Nani to his right. When the Portuguese picked out Chicharito at the far post and the Mexican could only head back into the middle for Stoke to clear, Berbatov was evidently incensed.

Nani had three points wrapped up as early as the seventh minute with his piledriver left-foot strike. And after the week United have just had, some semblance of simplicity was almost welcome.

The Reds now lead Group C by two points after Rangers and Valencia shared the spoils at Ibrox.

It’s hard not to feel deflated after the events of the past few days. Even Sir Alex responded to a reporter who told him this was his 2,000th game in management by quipping: “It feels like the 10,000th after this week”.

There can be no mistaking that Tuesday’s revelatory news that Wayne Rooney does not want to sign a new contract rocked Old Trafford. The Reds have experienced adversity before, and the reaction is always to unite. After all, ask any of the 70,000 fans inside Old Trafford and they will tell you: many players have been idolised, but ultimately it’s United the fans love.

Rooney wasn’t on the field due to an ankle injury sustained in training, hours before Sir Alex dropped a bombshell at his pre-match press conference. But it’s not just Rooney’s short-term absence that United must contend with. Sir Alex insisted the door remains open for Rooney to change his mind – there is no doubting his importance to the team since he arrived in 2004 – but the chances of that happening now looking wafer thin after Rooney released a statement hours before kick-off reiterating his stance.

United were left reflecting on yet more dropped points in the Barclays Premier League as the Reds once again surrendered a position of complete control at 2-0, albeit from a freakish Patrice Evra own goal and a rare Edwin van der Sar error.

An open game was to United’s favour and the Reds looked unstoppable in the first half when Javier Hernandez pounced on Nani’s parried free-kick to put United in front after just five minutes. Nani then turned goal-getter to make it 2-0 and Sir Alex's men were cruising. But a bizarre five minutes early in the second half knocked the Reds off rhythm that not even with Wayne Rooney emerging off the bench could rectify.

With all the attention and focus on Rooney in recent weeks, there was even more fuel for the press when the Reds striker was named on the bench. Sir Alex opted for the in-form Dimitar Berbatov and the livewire Javier Hernandez. And there’s no arguing that their attributes compliment each other.

The decision to start Chicharito paid dividends almost instantly when, after five minutes, he won a free-kick 30 yards out. Nani took it and his shot dipped and swerved so much that Scott Carson could only parry the effort. Hernandez has lightning fast reactions and he was first to pounce and found the net. His first league start at Old Trafford, and his first goal here, right in front of the Stretford End.

With two passing, attacking sides, the match was unsurprisingly open. And other than an occasional early tendency to concede possession, United looked good in attack.

The Mexican, on as a 77th-minute substitute, took just eight minutes to make his mark in the Mestalla, drilling home a low left-footed shot from the penalty spot to secure a famous win.

The result sends United top of Group C on four points, alongside Rangers, with back-to-back games against Turkish champions Bursaspor next in line.

Victory in Valencia on Wednesday night was no mean feat. Los Che currently top La Liga, ahead of Spanish football's traditional giants Real Madrid and Barcelona, and went into the game boasting an 11-game unbeaten home run in European competition.

What’s more, the Reds achieved the win without Wayne Rooney, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Gary Neville. Injuries meant all four missed United's flight to Spain on Tuesday, so the sight of Rio Ferdinand back in the centre of defence was particulaly reassuring.

That said, Sir Alex Ferguson’s men were twice behind at the Reebok Stadium and were it not for a brilliant first-half strike from Nani and Michael Owen’s glancing header just minutes after coming off the bench in the second half with United 2-1 down, this could have been a more damaging result.

United are clearly not in full flow. But there are a number of players to return from injury, while others are yet to hit top form. There was some good football played towards the end of the first half and the Reds undoubtedly dominated possession throughout. United are three points behind Chelsea and in second place, so it’s not panic stations. However, Sir Alex’s side will not want to let too many opportunities to check Chelsea’s rampaging start to the season slip away.

It was the same starting eleven that defeated Liverpool 3-2 at Old Trafford last Sunday. There was no place again for Rio Ferdinand, who missed the Merseysiders’ visit with a virus - he wasn't on the bench, reportedly being saved for Wednesday’s trip to Valencia. Ryan Giggs, who went off in the second half against Liverpool suffering from similar symptoms, recovered to take his place on the left wing, although he was later taken off with a hamstring strain that will keep him out for a number of weeks.

The Reds’ ruthlessness proved the difference in a Carling Cup cracker, as the holders cruised into the fourth round with a five-star finishing lesson at Scunthorpe.

The Iron deservedly scored first through Josh Wright but were then put to the sword by Michael Owen’s double, a first goal for Chris Smalling and memorable efforts from midfielders Darron Gibson and Ji-sung Park. Not that it was all one-way traffic from the moment Gibson equalised - Tomasz Kuszczak was kept busy throughout, making countless saves before he unluckily conceded a deflected second goal, for Martyn Woolford, in injury time.

It was again a case of another competition, another team for the Reds with every player from Sunday’s win over Liverpool rested. Still there were nine senior internationals in the eleven – plenty of quality to open a new quest for silverware and to excite the sell-out 9,000-plus crowd at Scunthorpe’s Glanford Park. But the home fans were off their seats for one of their own players inside the first thirty seconds when striker Jonathan Forte forced his way into the area, albeit without testing Kuszczak. The Reds keeper’s first real save of note came when he parried a ferocious first-time strike from left-back Eddie Nolan – on loan from Darren Ferguson’s Preston North End.

While another early effort on target from midfielder Woolford found the palms of the Pole, Kusczak was comfortably beaten by Scunthorpe’s stunning opener in the 19th minute. Woolford was the architect, ferrying the ball across the edge of the area before laying it off for Wright to fire a scorching drive into the top left-hand corner.

Dimitar Berbatov’s first hat-trick for United settled a pulsating clash as both the striker and the fixture lived up to Sir Alex Ferguson’s pre-match billing.

A stooping header in the first half, then a beautiful bicycle kick and a towering header in the second, earned the Bulgarian a standing ovation from the Old Trafford faithful and his team all three, priceless points. But the headlines would have been dramatically different had Dimitar not headed John O’Shea’s 84th-minute cross triumphantly past Pepe Reina - Liverpool had dragged themselves from 0-2 down to 2-2 with Steven Gerrard scoring from a penalty and a free-kick in a frenetic six-minute spell.

As expected, Sir Alex made almost wholesale changes to the side held 0-0 by Rangers in midweek – nine in total, including the one enforced by Antonio Valencia’s grim injury and another due to Rio Ferdinand reporting flu-like symptoms. But the team taking on Liverpool more closely resembled the league eleven that lined up against their local rivals Everton at Goodison Park – the only alteration being Wayne Rooney in for Gary Neville, with John O’Shea moving back from midfield to right-back.

With the rain steadily falling at Old Trafford, the Reds attempted to put the early skids under the visitors’ back-pedalling rearguard. United's Champions League campaign began with a frustrating 0-0 draw at Old Trafford on Tuesday night, against a Rangers team that, for long periods, bore more resemblance to Hadrian's Wall than a football side. Such was the strength and breadth of the visitors' defensive line.

The Scottish champions, who netted 82 goals in 38 league games last season, did little more than “park the bus” at Old Trafford, defending with a five-man backline and almost always 10 men behind the ball.

Rangers' tactics certainly weren't pretty but, as Reds boss Sir Alex Ferguson admitted afterwards, they were mightily effective. United struggled to break down the wall of blue and visiting goalkeeper Alan McGregor didn't have to make a single meaningful save.

"You have to give credit to Rangers," the boss said. "They have a formula for playing away from home that's successful."

To make matters worse for the home side, Antonio Valencia was carried from the pitch with a broken ankle and will undergo surgery on Wednesday morning. It's feared he will miss the rest of the season.

The 0-0 draw definitely wasn't the result the majority of the 74,408 fans inside Old Trafford had hoped for, but Sir Alex's men still have five games to secure safe passage to the knockout rounds of Europe's premier club competition.

"Tonight, that was a blemish," he said. "I always say you need 10 points to qualify – now we need nine points from five games."

United conceded twice in injury-time to somehow allow Everton a point, after the Reds had seemingly sewn up victory at Goodison Park.

Darren Fletcher quickly cancelled out Steven Pienaar's opener for the Toffees, before second-half goals from Nemanja Vidic and Dimitar Berbatov put United in a commanding position.

Tim Cahill's header in the first minute of injury-time appeared nothing more than a consolation, but Everton continued to press and took a share of the spoils when Mikel Arteta drilled home a loose ball deep inside the United area.

Sir Alex Ferguson, who omitted Wayne Rooney from his squad, would have been left mystified by his side's late lapses in concentration after defending capably for much of the match and spurning several chances to tie up victory.

Rio Ferdinand was also absent, while Antonio Valencia and Chicharito missed out after their midweek international exertions. That prompted the deployment of Dimitar Berbatov as a lone striker, flanked by Ryan Giggs and Nani and supported by a three-man central midfield of Fletcher, Paul Scholes and John O’Shea. As the Irishman shunted forward, Gary Neville returned at right-back in an otherwise unchanged defence.

Everton’s team selection betrayed the spate of injuries that had claimed the majority of their striking department. Yakubu was only fit enough to make the bench, while Louis Saha missed out entirely, provoking David Moyes’ selection of Marouane Fellaini and Tim Cahill as his side’s roving focal points.

United were just too good. The Reds dominated right from the start and West Ham's futile resistance only lasted until the 33rd minute when Wayne Rooney opened his account for the season from the penalty spot. Goals of unquestionable class from Nani and Dimitar Berbatov followed after the break, sealing as convincing and comfortable a 3-0 win as you are ever likely to witness.

Avram Grant’s side arrived at Old Trafford bottom of the table and without a win in their first two games – defeats to Aston Villa and Bolton Wanderers, which on both occasions saw them concede three goals. Their narrow 1-0 midweek win over Oxford offered some respite, but the second round of the League Cup is a far cry from Old Trafford, and the gulf in class was brutally apparent.

However, United too had a point to prove – which Sir Alex's men would do emphatically – after dropping two against Fulham last weekend. Sir Alex made three changes to the team that drew 2-2 at Craven Cottage. Rooney, who missed the Fulham trip with a stomach bug, replaced Javier Hernandez up front alongside Berbatov. Nani was drafted in for Antonio Valencia, while Ryan Giggs replaced Ji-sung Park.

The autumnal weather in Manchester – a seemingly random mix of wind, sun and rain – left a slick surface which, as well as encouraging a few late sliding tackles from West Ham’s feistier players, allowed United’s rapid passing to blossom.

Rooney registered the first effort on goal after 10 minutes, shuffling across the edge of the box to fire a low, skidding effort into Robert Green’s arms.

Despite twice taking the lead, through Paul Scholes' 150th club goal and a Brede Hangeland own-goal, United were held to a frustrating draw at Craven Cottage.

A bright start from the Reds was rewarded with a powerful long-range strike from veteran midfielder Scholes, but Fulham manfully rode out the storm, clawed their way back into the game and equalised when Simon Davies converted Damien Duff's low cross.

In a breathless finish to the afternoon, Hangeland struck twice from corners in the space of five minutes; first deflecting home Nani's centre to put United back into the lead, then powerfully heading in a 90th-minute leveller for the hosts. Irritatingly for the Reds, the Norwegian's pair bookended a crucial penalty miss by Nani.

As Wayne Rooney was left in Manchester to recover from a virus, Sir Alex Ferguson retained a 4-4-2 formation, and paired Chicharito - making his first league start - with Dimitar Berbatov. The only other change from the side which overcame Newcastle was the introduction of Ji-sung Park, who took the place of Nani on the left wing.

Even without injured goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer in goal, Fulham's line-up - also 4-4-2 - appeared capable of taking points off United for a third successive year at Craven Cottage.

The hosts were on the back foot early on as United popped passes around with conviction, but struggled to find a route through the Cottagers' well-drilled defence. Park's poke was deflected wide after nine minutes, however, signalling the onset of greater penetration. Moments later, only a fine reaction save from David Stockdale kept out Berbatov's acrobatic volley, but the stand-in stopper was helpless to prevent United taking the lead from the ensuing corner.

Collecting action figures can be an incredibly fun and rewarding hobby. It can make you feel like a kid again. It can help you celebrate your love for your favorite movie, comic book or TV show. And, if you buy carefully, it can become a great financial investment, as many figures reach values of hundreds of dollars on the collectible market.

But first, you need to ask yourself a few questions:

Why do I want to collect action figures?
Where should I start looking to begin my collection?
How should I collect and display my action figures?

Why?
We all know that action figures are cool, but what is your deeper reason for wanting to collect action figures as opposed to, say, stamps or coins? The answer to this question will help you make smarter purchases and ultimately build a better collection.

Are you a fan of a particular movie? Then you may want to limit your collection to action figures based on the movie (e.g., collecting only Star Wars figures). Are you a comic book fan? Then you may want to focus your collection on only Batman or Spider-Man figures.

Limiting your collection to just one or two themes will keep you from spending willy-nilly on any old action figure that catches your eye. Not having a focus can lead to a mish-mash collection of figures that, down the road, you may consider impulse purchases and ultimately a waste of your money.

Perhaps you're looking to find all of those great action figures that you had as a kid. This can be an expensive but greatly rewarding and nostalgic way of collecting.

If you're not careful in your purchases, you could end up with a massive collection with no rhyme or reason taking up every square inch of available space in your home, garage, storage unit and trunk of your car. This ultimately does not make for a satisfying collection.

As mentioned before, have a clear idea of which action figures you want to collect and stick to it, no matter how much you may be tempted by another figure that doesn't fit in to your theme.

One Last Thought: Loose or Mint?
This is a major debate among action figure collectors.

"Loose" refers to action figures that have been taken out of their packages, in order to display them in poses and holding their accessories (weapons, gear, etc.). Some collectors feel that this lowers the value of an action figure, but other collectors, who are less worried about the collectible re-sale value, prefer displaying their figures loose for the fun they get from displaying them "in action."

"Mint" can refer to action figures that are in the condition in which they were displayed in stores, in their original packages, with the packages in brand new condition. You may see terms on collectible and auction sites like "MIB" (mint in box), "MIP" (mint in package), or "NM" (near mint, meaning the figure is still in the package but has some wear and tear on the packaging).

This is a purely personal choice and can be equally rewarding for the collector, so be sure to give it some thought.

Now Start Collecting!
This should give you a good feel as to how to begin your new hobby of action figure collecting. But never forget the first and most important rule: have fun!

The Reds’ quest to regain the Barclays Premier League title began at Old Trafford on Monday night with a commanding win over newly-promoted Newcastle United.

Goals from Dimitar Berbatov and Darren Fletcher gave the home side a deserved lead at the break before substitute Ryan Giggs volleyed home a third to underline United’s dominance. By then, though, it was academic: the result never looked in doubt against a Magpies outfit that struggled to take flight, despite an encouraging opening 10 minutes.

There was interest than normal in the pre-match television build-up, as fans waited to see what sort of side Sir Alex would name for this season opener. It soon transpired there was no room for United's summer signings, as both Chris Smalling and Javier Hernandez started on the bench. Berbatov and Wayne Rooney were given the nod to lead the attack, while Patrice Evra, despite not featuring in any of United’s pre-season preparations, took up his familiar left-back position.

Fletcher and Paul Scholes, the latter taking part in his 15th consecutive opening-day fixture, were charged with bossing the centre of midfield and in former Red Alan Smith and bad-boy Joey Barton found themselves up against formidable and physical foes.

United landed the first blow in the battle of the Premier League heavyweights at Wembley to lift the season’s first silverware, as Antonio Valencia, Javier Hernandez and Dimitar Berbatov gave the Reds an ultimately convincing win in the Community Shield at Wembley.

Sir Alex’s men were by far the better side in an entertaining first half, while Chelsea edged a slower-paced second 45 minutes. But the quality of United’s finishing decided it. Valencia’s beautifully-crafted first-half effort and Berbatov’s lofted strike came either side of Hernandez’s comically deflected effort to secure a 14th Shield triumph.

It may be the dawn of a new season, but Sir Alex continues to conjure selection surprises. When his teamsheet landed at quarter past two at Wembley, everyone was surprised to see Michael Carrick’s name alongside Paul Scholes in central midfield. Just two days earlier, the United boss had said Carrick would miss the start of the season with an ankle injury. But his near miraculous recovery was critical to wresting control in the midfield battle.

United fans keen to see the summer signings Javier Hernandez and Chris Smalling would have to wait. It was less a contest and more a celebration – of United’s enduring Irish connection, of unerring finishing in front of goal and of a magnificent new sporting structure – as United romped to a 7-1 win against a League of Ireland XI in Dublin.

Wayne Rooney made his long-awaited club return but goals from Ji-sung Park (2), Michael Owen, Javier Hernandez, Antonio Valencia, Jonny Evans and Nani stole the show.

The Reds, English football's crown jewels, had travelled to the Emerald Isle to open Dublin's glistening new Aviva Stadium. And it was a group of rough diamonds, mined from the semi-professional League of Ireland, who had been charged with the unenviable task of trying to stop United's stars from shining.

For 13 minutes, the home side – a term used loosely here, for United supporters dominated the virgin terraces – succeeded. But the Reds, bolstered by returning World Cup stars Rooney, Park, Michael Carrick and Nemanja Vidic – all playing their first games since the summer tournament – were never likely to stumble. Valencia and Owen were also named in Sir Alex’s starting XI, their first run-outs since injury curtailed their 2009/10 campaigns. For Owen, it meant the end of a five-month wait to lace up his boots again.

United’s first visit to Mexico ended in disappointment as the Reds lost 3-2 to Club Deportivo Guadalajara - aka Chivas - at the newly-opened Estadio Omnilife.

As expected, the night was all about one Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez. He began the evening in the red and white of his former team and gave the home fans the perfect farewell gift with a brilliantly-taken goal after just 10 minutes. Chicharito changed teams at the break to make his second appearance for United, and therefore finished on the losing side after further Chivas goals from Adolfo Bautista and Hector Reynoso. Chris Smalling - with his first goal for the club - and Nani were the Reds' scorers.

A spectacular opening ceremony (the party continued at half-time as well) preceded the game with an on-pitch ‘show’ akin to what we’re used to seeing before the World Cup kick-off with lasers, dramatic music, dancers and fireworks all involved to mark the first game at Chivas’ hugely impressive, spaceship-like arena.

The pre-match performers eventually made way for the evening’s main acts – kick-off was delayed by 15 minutes - with Sir Alex opting to give youth a chance against Chivas’ first choice eleven which included, of course, Chicharito. A sprinkling of experienced heads also lined up for United with Tomasz Kuszczak, John O’Shea – captain for the night, Paul Scholes and Dimitar Berbatov all starters.

Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez got his United career off to a dream start as he helped the Reds claim the MLS All-Star trophy following a 5-2 victory in Houston.

Below the closed roof of the hugely impressive Reliant Stadium – home of the Houston Texans’ American football team – the Reds bounced back from a shock defeat in Kansas City to hammer the MLS All-Stars thanks to goals from Federico Macheda (2) – the first of his brace coming after just 24 seconds – Darron Gibson, Tom Cleverley and new boy Chicharito.

The Mexican striker came on for the final half an hour and looked lively throughout. His looping finish from the edge of the box over goalkeeper Nick Rimando was a goal of top quality and certainly bodes well for the future.

After a two-game break, Edwin van der Sar returned between the sticks, while Rafael and Fabio flanked Wes Brown and Jonny Evans across the back four. United suffered a first defeat of the North America tour in Kansas City, albeit with major doubts over the legitimacy of Kei Kamara’s winner for the Wizards.

Kamara had earlier set up his captain Davy Arnaud to fire the home side ahead, before Dimitar Berbatov’s penalty - following another debatable decision by referee Terry Vaughn who controversially sent off Jimmy Conrad for his part in the incident - drew the Reds level. Kamara then headed Ryan Smith’s corner past young United goalkeeper Ben Amos, but even TV replays were inconclusive as to whether the whole ball crossed the line.

The 2-1 victory for Kansas City Wizards delighted large sections of the 52,000 crowd at the impressive Arrowhead Stadium, home of the local American football outfit, the Kansas City Chiefs.

Sir Alex Ferguson opted to field a relatively young side, including the likes of Ben Amos, Ritchie De Laet and Mame Biram Diouf, but ensured there was a sprinkling of experience with Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Dimitar Berbatov all starting. Nani made his first appearance of the tour having recovered from the collarbone injury which kept him out of the World Cup.

The Portuguese winger was involved in United’s first real attack on 10 minutes. After his free-kick was blocked the ball fell to Scholes who fired a typically well-struck effort goalwards which was well saved by Jimmy Nielsen down to his right.

The Wizards, who had started the brighter of the two sides, sprung a shock a minute later when they took the lead.

Gabriel Obertan’s well-taken winner ensured a second successive tour victory for the Reds, who ran out 1-0 victors over Philadelphia Union at the Lincoln Financial Field.

Obertan collected a clever pass from the impressive Danny Welbeck before slotting home from close range 14 minutes from time to claim a hard-fought win.

The Reds survived a couple of scares at the other end, with Tomasz Kuszczak making a fine reflex stop just before Obertan fired the decisive strike. The Frenchman's goal was the highlight of a match that was good in patches but largely uneventful.

Sir Alex made six changes to the side that started against Celtic in Toronto five days earlier. Kuszczak started in goal behind a back four of John O’Shea, Wes Brown, Jonny Evans and Fabio. Obertan and Ryan Giggs took up wide positions, with Tom Cleverley, scorer of United’s third goal in the win over Celtic, given his chance alongside Paul Scholes in the centre of midfield. Welbeck, another scorer against the Bhoys, partnered Federico Macheda in attack.

Just like the match against Celtic, the Reds started brightly and went close to breaking the deadlock on three minutes when Macheda put Obertan in down the right. The winger took a touch before letting fly from a tight angle but his low shot found the side-netting. Obertan was involved again six minutes later when he connected with Welbeck’s fine cross, but his well-struck volley flew wide.

United kicked off their tour of North America with a hard-fought 3-1 win over Celtic at the Rogers Centre in Toronto.

Dimitar Berbatov, who impressed throughout, gave the Reds a first half lead with a fine finish, before Bhoys substitute Georgios Samaras fired an equaliser from the spot six minutes after the restart following debutant Chris Smalling's foul in the area. Danny Welbeck and Tom Cleverley followed suit in coming off the bench to score as they sealed victory for the Reds.

Sir Alex gave a first start to summer signing Chris Smalling, who lined up alongside Jonny Evans at the heart of the defence with the Da Silva twins down both flanks. Captain for the evening Darren Fetcher partnered Paul Scholes in midfield, with Gabriel Obertan and Ryan Giggs, who was the big favourite amongst the Canadian fans, on the right and left wings respectively. Mame Biram Diouf lined up in attack alongside Dimitar Berbatov.

Just under 40,000 watched on from the stands with most of them there to cheer on the Reds who donned their new home kit for the first time. The setting was quite spectacular with Toronto's famous CN Tower stretching high into the blue skies above the pitch which was only laid 24 hours earlier after the Toronto Argonauts opening CFL home game on astroturf.

It didn't seem to have a negative effect on United though who, having seen Marc Antoine Fortune test Edwin van der Sar with a low drive on seven minutes, began to take a foothold in the game.

A season of thrills and spills, up and downs, highs and lows, all built towards a final-day climax. Sadly, there were no dramatic scenes of ecstasy in Manchester, as Chelsea smashed eight past Wigan Athletic at Stamford Bridge to clinch the title and render the result at Old Trafford meaningless – even though United produced a wholly professional performance to see off Stoke with ease.

The time for reflection and the dissection of this most unpredictable of campaigns lies ahead, but United can be proud at least that, in a difficult season hampered by injuries, the Reds pushed Chelsea right until the very last.

Sir Alex was able to select arguably his strongest team for this season finale and his men did him, and the club, proud with the display. Paul Scholes and Darren Fletcher have easily been United’s most potent central midfield pair, while they were flanked by the in-form Nani and Ryan Giggs, with Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov in attack.

Rio Ferdinand was handed a start for the first time since the 0-0 draw with Blackburn, while Gary Neville, who missed the wins over Tottenham Hotspur and Sunderland, joined him in a back four that also included Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra, with Edwin van der Sar in goal.

United came out of the traps quickly, determined to keep our side of the bargain. Berbatov had the Reds’ early chances. The first came after Nani surged down the left and found Rooney, who cut the ball back for Berbatov, whose shot was blocked.

When the pressure’s on, Manchester United so often produce the goods. Knowing defeat at the Stadium of Light would hand the title to Chelsea, Sir Alex’s men turned in a polished performance against a feisty Sunderland side to ensure the title race will now go down to the wire.

The win – achieved courtesy of a solitary goal from Nani's right boot – means Chelsea lead by just one point heading into the final day of the season. The Blues host Wigan, while United welcome Stoke City to Old Trafford.

It can’t have been easy for Sir Alex’s men to step onto the pitch in Sunderland after seeing Chelsea beat Liverpool at Anfield in the day’s early kick-off. But the Reds, boosted by the inclusion of Wayne Rooney from the opening whistle, began brightly.

Rooney, who had started only two of United’s last five fixtures, took just four minutes to make an impact, chesting down a cross from Dimitar Berbatov and volleying towards the far post. Sunderland goalkeeper Craig Gordon was equal to the task and then grateful to his defenders for blocking Ryan Giggs’ follow-up.

At the other end, the home side threatened twice from set pieces: John Mensah headed wide from an early corner before captain Lorik Cana flicked a free-kick just over the bar. Mensah limped off after 18 minutes, though, as Black Cats boss and former United captain Steve Bruce was forced to reshuffle his defence.

The Reds almost reaped immediate rewards when Giggs clipped the corner of the crossbar after expertly making space for himself on the edge of the box.

The sprint finish for the title is well and truly on as United cranked up the pressure on Chelsea, the Reds moving two points clear at the summit of the Barclays Premier League – naturally, not without drama – in a game that went from frustrating to fraught before a Nani-inspired grandstand finish.

Ryan Giggs put United in front from the spot in the second half, but Tottenham equalised through Ledley King and arguably looked like being the team to win it. However, the victory was secured by some brilliance from Nani. The Portuguese winger scored with an audacious chipped finish with nine minutes left, before earning a second penalty for Giggs to convert to ensure a 3-1 win.

That there would be drama and frayed nerves should not have come as a surprise in a topsy-turvy season which took arguably its wildest twist last weekend.

United were seconds away from being out of the title race altogether at Eastlands when the derby was headed for a draw. In the third minute of injury time a Paul Scholes-of-old late dart into the box and header into the bottom corner clinched three points. That dramatic win was capped by Tottenham’s defeat of Chelsea later that day. Game on in the title race.

Tottenham posed a serious risk after their wins over the Blues and Arsenal. As difficult as this fixture already was, it was made more difficult when Wayne Rooney was ruled out with a groin problem. Sir Alex intimated on Friday that he had “one or two doubts”, but Rooney’s availability was only publicly brought to light when he was pictured watching the Under-18s at Carrington on Saturday.

Paul Scholes headed a priceless last-gasp winner at Eastlands to keep United in the hunt for the Barclays Premier League title.

After a tense, tight derby encounter, the midfielder popped up in the final minute of added time to nod home Patrice Evra's superb cross and move the Reds to within a point of Chelsea, ahead of the league leaders' late-afternoon trip to Tottenham.

Amid the Reds' ongoing chase for a fourth straight title, the subplot of City's challenge for local and, ultimately, national supremacy had seemed set to hog the headlines. But Scholes had other ideas and just a day after penning a one-year contract extension, the 35-year-old illustrated his enduring value not only with his winner, but by dictating play in a masterful midfield performance.

Of United's three pre-match injury doubts, two recovered sufficiently to join the starting XI. Wayne Rooney and Ryan Giggs were both available, but Rio Ferdinand's groin injury prompted a return for Jonny Evans alongside Nemanja Vidic in the centre of defence.

Both sides started the game with evident intent to attack. Darren Fletcher fired a 25-yard effort inches wide of Shay Given's post, with the Irishman well beaten, before Carlos Tevez's top corner free-kick drew a fine full-length catch from Edwin van der Sar.

Despite coming out of their corners swinging, both sides quickly displayed an awareness of the potential cost of failure. United bossed possession by virtue of an extra man in midfield, but refused to overcommit in support of Rooney, while City sat deep, costing themselves the chance to offer quick, accurate service to Tevez and Emmanuel Adebayor.
